Of all the things I’ve made in my life, these mixes are my favorites. Musically, this mix is a bit of a departure featuring underground electronic music of the deep house, minimal, and experimental variety.

I decided that I wanted to do something really special for this mix, so I solicited five of the most talented writers I know and asked them to contribute. I then remixed their vocals into dance tracks and came out with the following. The very lovely and talented ladies who helped me are Kathy Regina , Megan Martin , Andrea Rexilius, Olivia Cronk , and Della Watson . Please check out their work; they’re all incredibly talented and very worthy of your time.

The gulf coast is devastated while Rand Paul defends big business and assails the Civil Rights Act. Twenty million people tune in to watch the final episode of an overwrought television drama, but not a fraction of one percent of those people write their congressmen about bank regulation, bailouts, habeas corpus, a decade of war, ecocide, drilling on public lands, the blasting of mountaintops for coal. There’s a despair that loses resonance in the white wash of entertainment so pervasive in our culture.

Dancing is a political act. It connects us to the body, to the present, to the timeless and the physical. It bellies the passivity of television consumption, the ridiculousness that has become social networking. Dance is a celebration, even if we’re dancing in the ruins of an empire.

Sometimes I mull over a mix for months or even years, and then there are other times when a couple of tracks fit together and before I know it the mix is finished. That’s the case with “Seeds,” a minimal mix with lots of atmosphere and some avant garde elements thrown in (minimal techno, opera, and disco lite?).

When these mixes form it’s best just to get out of the way and let the music speak for itself. I’ve tried to make my presence in this mix more felt than heard. Take a listen and see what you think.

All good things, they say, must come to an end. Over the last year I have watched Electro music in its death throes, on the tube and over the airways, and for a genre that owned the underground for much of this decade it has been a painful decline to watch.

Since the early aught’s, when Fisherspooner Emerged and Peaches Fucked the Pain Away, electro music has been the sound of Saturday nights—trashy, brass, in-your-face, and unapologetically urban. Electro was this generation’s punk, replacing the tired drone of electric guitars with speaker feedback and synthesizers. Most of us still don’t know how they make the sounds. For me, Electro has been the most exciting form of electronic music since the rave underground of the early 90’s. And now it’s time to say goodbye.

Like everything that is good and underground, Electro has been homogenized by the mainstream—gutted and made safe for mass consumption. Britney Spears has done Electro. Madonna has done electro. Alanis Morissette has painfully done electro. Even Miley Cyrus has done electro. Electro is on TV, selling you hamburgers, cars, and condoms. After an art form has been so completely dissected, replicated by people who don’t understand the form and don’t care to—only want to sound “edgy” and “cool”— there’s just nowhere left for that art form to go.

Our favorite club in Chicago, Berlin — a hub for the latest electro, has probably moved on by now. So, I’ll keep electro as a fond memory of Saturday nights in my 20’s. The music is pounding, the floor is jumping, everyone is packed in and sweating, x’d out of our minds and ready to throw down. That electronic sizzle has us all in its control, so we just keep dancing.

Here’s one more for the road! One more DJ HeckRight mix before we sign off and go find the next art form that hasn’t been co-opted yet. Electro, it’s been a great ride and I’m sad to see you go.

RockMix, the first of two DJ sets I played live in San Diego in August of 2006. Just one mile from the ocean, over 300 people gathered to drink, laugh, and dance away the end of summer. Not everyone in the P.B. shared our rockin’ enthusiasm, however, as the San Diego Police Department showed up to shut us down after less than an hour of partying. Luckily, our dear buddy Jason was on-hand to handle the cops, and after the bacon left the music rolled on well into the next morning. Play RockMix loud enough and maybe the cops will shut you down too, but not before you finish that bitchin’ air guitar solo at the 43 minute mark!
